ISO/IEC 15444-12:2012 specifies the structure and uses of the ISO base media file format. The identical text is published as ISO/IEC 14496-12:2012. This file format is used to contain time-based media such as video and audio. The storage of particular coding schemes is defined in specifications that derive from and reference ISO/IEC 15444-12:2012 and ISO/IEC 14496-12:2012, such as the MPEG-4 file format specified in ISO/IEC 14496-14, or the Motion JPEG file format specified in ISO/IEC 15444-3.
This file format is designed to contain timed media information for a presentation in a flexible, extensible format that facilitates interchange, management, editing and presentation of the media. This presentation may be "local" to the system containing the presentation, or may be via a network or other stream delivery mechanism. The file format is designed to be independent of any particular network protocol while enabling efficient support for them in general.
The file structure is object-oriented; a file can be decomposed into constituent objects very simply, and the structure of the objects inferred directly from their type.
This technically identical text is published as ISO/IEC 14496-12:2012 for MPEG-4, and as ISO/IEC 15444-12:2012 for JPEG 2000, and reference to this specification should be made accordingly. The recommendation is to reference one, for example ISO/IEC 15444-12:2012, and append to the reference a parenthetical comment identifying the other, for example "(technically identical to ISO/IEC 14496-12:2012)".

Specifies the use of the wavelet-based JPEG2000 codec for the coding and display of timed sequences of images (motion sequences), possibly combined with audio, and composed into an overall presentation. In this specification, a file format is defined, and guidelines for the use of the JPEG2000 codec for motion sequences are supplied.

This Recommendation | International Standard defines a normative but optional file format for storing compound images using the JPEG 2000 file format family architecture. This format is an extension of the JP2 file format defined in Rec. ITU-T T.800 | ISO/IEC 15444-1 Annex I and uses boxes defined for both the JP2 file format and the JPX file format defined in Rec. ITU-T T.801 | ISO/IEC 15444-2 Annex M. This Recommendation | International Standard is useful for applications storing multiple pages, images with mixed content, and/or images that need more structure than provided in JP2.

This Recommendation | International Standard specifies the framework, concepts, and methodology for securing JPEG 2000 codestreams. The scope of this Recommendation | International Standard is to define: 1) a normative codestream syntax containing information for interpreting secure image data; 2) a normative process for registering JPSEC tools with a registration authority delivering a unique identifier; 3) informative examples of JPSEC tools in typical use cases; 4) informative guidelines on how to implement security services and related metadata
